All-new 2013 Honda Accord Coupe Earns Highest Safety Ratings in Midsize Class 2013 Accord Coupe joins Accord Sedan in earning 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from NHTSA; all Accord models now boast top overall NHTSA and IIHS safety ratings

The completely redesigned  2013 Honda Accord Coupe has earned the highest available safety rating ? a 5-Star1 Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The 2013 Accord Coupe is the only vehicle in its class to earn a NHTSA 5-star Overall Vehicle Score and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating with GOOD ratings in all test modes. For model year 2013, all tested Honda models have earned a TOP SAFETY PICK or TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the IIHS (only the Civic Coupe, FCX Clarity and Fit EV have not been tested).

"The Honda comprehensive approach to vehicle safety is validated by these top-level safety ratings," said Art St. Cyr, vice president of product planning and logistics at American Honda. "The 2013 Honda Accord truly excels in all areas, delivering the best overall safety ratings, while also providing exhilarating performance, outstanding comfort and top-class fuel economy."

The Accord Coupe earned the 5-star Overall Vehicle Score by garnering a 5-star rating in each seating position in the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) frontal, side-barrier, and side-pole crash test categories, as well as a 5-star rollover rating. The 2013 Coupe joins the Honda Accord Sedan in earning an Overall 5-Star Safety Rating under NHTSA's testing.

In addition to its NCAP 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score designation, the 2013 Honda Accord Sedan is the only car in its class to earn a GOOD rating in all IIHS test modes, including the Institute's aggressive, new small overlap frontal crash test. Under the IIHS' testing program, the new small overlap frontal crash test?sometimes called a "narrow offset" test?is designed to replicate what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object such as a tree or utility pole at high speed.

Beginning with the 2013 Honda Accord, Honda is applying the second generation of the Honda Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™ II) body structure to its models. This reinforced frontal structure further enhances frontal crash energy management through a wider range of offset and oblique collision modes.

New standard and available safety and visibility technologies in Accord models such as Back-Up Camera, Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Watch help increase driver awareness in the front, sides, and rear of the vehicle.

In addition to the Honda next-generation Advanced Compatibility (ACE II) body structure, passive-safety features offered as standard equipment on the 2013 Accord include dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags, and new SmartVent™ front side airbags, and side curtain airbags. The new SmartVent side airbag construction helps mitigate the risk of injury to occupants that may be positioned in the deployment path of the side airbag. SmartVent also allows heating of the passenger seatback on EX-L and Touring models.

A new generation's what's called for, and Honda sent out its scouts at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show in the form of the Accord Coupe Concept, a precursor to the new Accord lineup expected in the 2013 model year.

With the new generation, Honda plans to revive the Hybrid sedan that it offered briefly in the last generation, withdrawing the gas-electric model after the 2009 model year due to poor sales. The new hybrid will also offer plug-in capability, which would mirror the strategy being taken by Ford with the 2013 Fusion sedan.

In Honda's plug-in system, a lean-burn four-cylinder and 6-kilowatt-hour battery are paired with a 120-kilowatt electric motor to give the new four-door an electric-only range of 10 to 15 miles and a top speed of 62 mph. Honda says a full recharge of the battery pack will take less than four hours with a standard 110-volt plug, and less than 90 minutes with a 240-volt charger. The hybrid's other drive modes will blend gas and electric power through an electric continuously variable transmission, or will allow the sedan to use only gas power for best efficiency. This version is promised for sale by the end of 2012.

Further down the efficiency scale is a new four-cylinder with direct injection. The 2.4-liter four will be paired only with a continuously variable transmission fitted with an eco driving mode. Available in two- and four-door Accords, with 181 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque, the four-cylinder's power levels are comparable to today's Accord, while Honda says gas mileage should top its class--though it's uncertain if the Fusion's dramatic new fuel economy numbers are factored into that equation.

At the top of the lineup is a revised version of Honda's 3.5-liter V-6, now connected to either a six-speed manual or Automatic Transmission, and fitted with an eco driving mode. Honda hasn't released horsepower figures or fuel economy numbers here, but says power output is higher, while gas mileage is better.

Visually, the Accord Coupe Concept refines the basic shapes of today's car, but the details seem to knit together more effectively than with the current car, with a smoother, wraparound grille and headlights and more sculpted flanks. The 2013 Accord shrinks in external dimensions--but Honda says interior space is similar to today's car, though the wheelbase is shorter and curb weight lower. Without divulging suspension, steering or brake details, Honda also says the new Accord will have more responsive handling.

On the safety front, the Accord adds a dollop of technology with forward-crash and lane-departure warning systems, which use a windshield-mounted forward camera to sense impending trouble. Blind-spot monitors will be available, as will a multi-angle rearview camera.

Among other features, the new Accord is set to adopt standard Bluetooth; an LCD display; text-to-voice capability; and streaming audio capability via Pandora and Apple's iPhone.

No changes were announced for the Crosstour, the hatchback Accord spin-off that formerly shared the best-selling nameplate. For the 2012 model year, Honda removed "Accord" from the name, and now simply calls that vehicle the Crosstour.

Odyssey becomes the only minivan to earn top safety ratings from both IIHS and NHTSA under more-stringent testing guidelines

The 2011 Honda Odyssey minivan achieved a historic safety milestone, becoming the first and only minivan to earn the highest possible safety ratings from both the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under their respective more-stringent testing guidelines. No other minivan this year has received both a 2011 TOP SAFETY PICK award from IIHS and a "Overall Vehicle Score1" of five stars from NHTSA.

The Odyssey was recently named a 2011 TOP SAFETY PICK from IIHS, the institute's highest honor. The award recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting vehicle occupants involved in front, side and rear crashes, plus rollover performance based on ratings in IIHS tests, as well as having a standard electronic stability control system. The Odyssey earned the highest-possible score of GOOD in all four ratings, including the more rigorous roof-strength test.

In addition to earning the TOP SAFETY PICK designation, the Odyssey was one of the first vehicles to achieve NHTSA's best-possible "Overall Vehicle Score" of five stars. The newly introduced Overall Vehicle Score is part of the federal government's New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) that is first being applied to 2011 models. The Odyssey achieved its top "Overall Vehicle Score" with five-star ratings for the frontal crash safety test and both side crash safety tests2 in all evaluated front and rear seating positions and scenarios. The Odyssey also received four stars for the rollover rating3.

All 2011 Odyssey vehicles utilize the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure. ACE is an exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal crashes. The ACE design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle. This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment. Standard safety equipment includes Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with traction control; an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS); three-row side curtain airbags with rollover sensor; dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags; a driver's front side airbag; and a front passenger's side airbag with an occupant position detection system.

Overall, the Odyssey improves for the 2011 model year with greater interior functionality, a more distinctive style and higher fuel economy. Significant enhancements to the interior include a new 3-mode second-row seat design that is more comfortable for center passengers (Odyssey EX and above). A more powerful and efficient 3.5-liter i-VTEC V-6 engine features Variable Cylinder Management (standard on all models for 2011) and produces 248 hp while delivering an EPA-estimated4 city/highway/combined fuel economy of 19/28/22 mpg on Odyssey Touring models.

New technology available on certain models includes a rear entertainment system with a 16.2-inch ultrawide split-screen display and an auxiliary High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) video input, an "intelligent" Multi-Information Display (i-MID) with customizable wallpaper, integration of FM traffic data on navigation models and much more.

The 2011 Odyssey is truly an American-made vehicle ? designed, engineered and assembled in the United States. The Odyssey is produced exclusively at Honda Manufacturing of Alabama (HMA) using domestic and globally sourced parts.

The 2011 Honda Accord Sedan has earned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA's) best-possible Overall Vehicle Score1 of five stars, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today.

Helping the Accord achieve the top score were five-star ratings for overall frontal crash safety, overall side crash safety and rollover resistance. The Accord is one of only six vehicles to achieve a five-star Overall Vehicle Score to date, and is the first to achieve five stars in each of the three ratings categories: 5-star frontal crash rating, 5-star side crash rating (combined results of side barrier and side pole) and 5-star rollover rating.

The newly introduced Overall Vehicle Score is part of the federal government's more stringent New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) that is first being applied to 2011 models. As a convenience to new car shoppers, the Overall Vehicle Score represents the combined results of the overall ratings from the frontal crash tests, the side crash tests2and the rollover-resistance3 into a single, summary score between one and five stars.

Revised for 2011, the frontal crash safety test incorporates a crash dummy representative of a small-size female in the front passenger's seat and, as before, an average-size male crash dummy in the driver's seat. The side-crash safety evaluations continue to include the side-barrier test used previously where a moving barrier strikes a stationary vehicle at an angle. However, a new side-pole test has been added where a moving vehicle strikes a stationary pole barrier. Ratings are provided for both of the individual seating positions in the side-barrier crash safety test, as well as a combined rating for both positions, while the side-pole rating is based on a test of the frontal seating position only. The front seating position side barrier crash safety test result also is combined with the side-pole crash safety test result for a front seat side impact rating, with the results of all of the tests combined into an overall side-crash safety rating.

The side-barrier crash test now implements a combination of male and female crash test dummies, with the male positioned in a front seating position (as before) and the small female (new) in a rear seating position. The newly introduced side-pole crash test exclusively uses the small female crash dummy in a front seating position.

What has Forbes found to be the most value-packed cars? In the midst of rising gas prices, leading the
pack on the list from Forbes were compact cars.

In fact, this segment was represented by vehicles in three of the top four spots, including the No. 1
model on the list: the Mazda2.

The Nissan Versa was second and the Chevrolet Cruze was fourth.

"These days, compacts are some of the safest bets when it comes to getting the most value for the
money," wrote Hannah Elliot, of Forbes.com.

Among brands, Honda led with way with four on the list, while Toyota picked up two spots. Mazda,
Nissan, Chevrolet and Hyundai each earned one spot.

Elliot went on to explain that she took Vincentric's cost-of-ownership data to determine the top
vehicles. Forbes chose 114 models deemed to have "excellent" overall value ratings.

Using each vehicle's respective MSRP and the five-year impact of several factors (depreciation, taxes
and fees, fuel costs, insurance, interest, maintenance, opportunity costs and repairs) on each model's
ownership costs, Forbes developed a ranking of the 114 vehicles, Elliot explained.

Forbes took the top 10 of that group to create the final list.

As most know, depreciation is the heftiest ownership cost, especially for luxury models.

"One of the reasons the Toyota Prius made our list is because of its outstanding depreciation ratio. Alt
-fuel vehicles in particular do well with on resale lots," Elliot shared.

Non-luxury vehicles also have the advantage of lower prices, which helps in the value as well, she
pointed out.

While it's not always the case that a low MSRP means a good value, Elliott pointed out that a few
pickups and crossovers were helped by having low initial price tags, giving the example of the
Hyundai Tucson, which was No. 7, and the Toyota Tacoma, which came in fifth.

"They both demand a bit more for fuel costs over five years than their smaller counterparts, but their
reliability (low maintenance and repair costs), low MSRPs and ? most importantly ? current low
depreciation rates qualify them as value-packed vehicles," Elliott wrote.
